Senior Scala Engineer

Responsibilities

As a Senior Scala Engineer at Nexi Digital, you will join the Cards team, which builds and runs e-commerce card payment acceptance and processing for Nexi's Payment Service Providers and large merchants. The team has full ownership of its solution – from code, through the AWS infrastructure, to operations in a PCI DSS-certified environment.

This is a role for someone who takes topics end-to-end: you pick up a problem, work it out with the team, ship it to production, and own it afterwards. You will work remotely with colleagues in four countries, so clear, proactive communication is as much part of the job as the code.

• Developing and maintaining the main payment gateway written in Scala (Play Framework), running on AWS.

• Building the new standalone Network Tokenization service, managing Visa, Mastercard and other scheme integrations and the token lifecycle.

• Integrating with acquiring systems over ISO 8583 and with Visa and Mastercard APIs for network tokenization.

• Building and maintaining the team's AWS infrastructure, together with the rest of the team.

• Developing supporting components as AWS Lambdas in TypeScript and Python, and Python-based test tooling.

• Working with PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.

• Applying security practices required by PCI DSS across development, deployment, and operations.

• Collaborating with other Relay teams (merchant management, notifications) in an English-speaking team spread across Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and Finland.

• Taking ownership of your topics end-to-end and driving them forward proactively, in close contact with the team.

• Sharing knowledge and supporting less experienced engineers in the team.

Benefits

• Motivizer Benefits Platform to choose and manage all your benefits in one place. You receive a budget (550 PLN monthly). You can choose medical care package, meal tickets, sports cards (we have Multisport and on preferential terms, we have membership cards to one of the most popular Gyms), cinema tickets, shop vouchers, discounts and many more.

• Language Courses – you'll have access to a multi-language learning platform enabling you to practice you language skills and learn new ones!

• Regular and systematic further training opportunities - both internally and from external providers. We support your ongoing learning and development.

• Cooperation within  an internal community is our everyday reality. We have networking events, coding challenges, and company parties for different occasions.

Qualifications

• Successfully completed university degree in computer science or a comparable field of study.

• 5+ years of hands-on backend development, including production-critical systems.

• Willingness to write production code in Scala – your language background doesn't matter; Scala experience is a strong plus.

• Experience with cloud infrastructure on AWS, including building and maintaining it (not only using it).

• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB).

• End-to-end responsibility – you own your topics from analysis through production and operations, not just the code you write.

• Self-driven – you take ownership, find answers on your own, and move topics forward without waiting for detailed instructions.

• Strong communication – you keep the team informed, ask early, say when something is at risk and feel comfortable working remotely with colleagues across several countries.

• Fluency in Polish and very good communication in English.

• Availability to work in a hybrid mode. Remote workers, we invite to the office once every month.

Nice to have

• Commercial experience with Scala and Play Framework, or with another functional language.

• Interest in joining the team's on-call rotation after onboarding (optional, not a requirement).

• Frontend experience – full-stack profile is a great fit for the team.

• Experience with TypeScript or Python (AWS Lambda).

• Background in payments / card processing: acquiring, ISO 8583, card schemes, network tokenization.

• Knowledge of PCI-DSS requirements.
