Senior Backend Engineer (Python/AWS)

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Python/AWS) to join a growing US-based insurtech company building AI software for the insurance industry. Its software already runs in production at insurance companies, where it supports professional workflows such as underwriting, claims handling, and pricing. The product helps insurance teams work faster and make more accurate decisions, and its use is expanding into further parts of the business. You will join the team responsible for the external-facing APIs behind the company's core customer workflows. Your work will centre on designing and building API endpoints, integrating third-party services, tuning database and query performance, and turning product requirements into dependable business logic.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience

• Experience building external-facing APIs or integrations with third-party systems

• Strong programming skills in Python, or in another object-oriented language with a willingness to work in Python

• Experience with serverless technologies and cloud environments, such as AWS Lambda and EC2

• Experience designing asynchronous workflows

• Experience working with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL

• Strong fundamentals in system design, debugging, and problem-solving

• A track record of taking full ownership of work and driving projects to completion with minimal oversight

• Proactive communication, surfacing blockers and keeping stakeholders informed

• Comfort with experimentation: testing ideas, measuring results, and iterating quickly

• Excellent English communication skills

Nice to Have

• Experience with LLMs or generative AI

• Experience with distributed systems

Responsibilities

• Design and build external-facing API endpoints that carry core customer workflows

• Integrate the platform with a wide range of third-party services

• Translate product requirements into reliable business logic

• Improve database and query performance across the platform

• Diagnose and resolve customer issues as they arise

• Contribute to making the platform faster, more stable, and easier to use

• Build scalable backend solutions that support the company's growth

• Collaborate with full-stack, data, ML, and DevOps engineers across a global team

• Take ownership of features from concept through to production

• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions
